Hexagonal Table #1999-1275Senate Government Party Room, North Wing, Main Floor
Hexagonal walnut table with cross-banded top, resting on a central hexagonal stand surrounded by twelve columns, on an inverted breakfront plinth base.
History
This hexagonal table was designed in 1926 by the Federal Capital Commission Architects Department, led by principal architect John Smith Murdoch, specifically for Provisional Parliament House. This table was manufactured by one of the six firms that were contracted to construct Murdoch’s designs (Myer Emporium Pty Ltd, Anthony Hordern and Sons, A Pengelly and Co, W H Rocke and Co, Beard Watson & Co, and Bebarfalds Ltd). The hexagonal nature of the table suggests it was originally designed for the Senate Club Room, which was designed for use by the senators of the six states which make up the Australian Commonwealth. Senators for the ACT and the Northern Territory were not elected until 1975.
