Menu #2006-3701-2Members’ Dining Room, Main Floor
Parliamentary Breakfast Menu consisting of a red cardboard cover with yellow paper insert printed in gold ink; bound with a yellow ribbon.
This Parliamentary Breakfast Menu was used in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Refreshment Rooms in Provisional Parliament House.
The facilities were intended to provide some comfort and compensation for long sitting hours in the building and extended periods away from home and many casual meals and social events were held there.
Crisp white tablecloths and sparkling silver cutlery welcomed members and senators to their party’s particular tables. Unlike in most Australian homes, waiters, and later waitresses, provided silver service. They served the politicians’ food from elegant silver platters directly onto their plates at the table.
Many impressive state occasions were held in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Refreshment Rooms or Members’ Dining Room. On these occasions, formal decorations reflected the nature of the event, and silver service and souvenir menus were the order of the day.
